The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to organize the Nepal Makeathon for Assistive Technology from February 16–18 at the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Lalitpur. This dynamic event will bring together innovators, designers, and individuals with disabilities to develop practical assistive devices aimed at improving accessibility and independence.
What makes this Makeathon unique is its participatory design approach—where individuals with disabilities, referred to as ‘need knowers,’ will actively collaborate with designers. By integrating their firsthand experiences, the solutions created will not only be innovative but also truly impactful and tailored to real-world needs.
The initiative is a joint effort by the Government of Nepal, ADB, the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR), the Embassy of Japan, Kathmandu University, FabLab Nepal, and Impact Hub Kathmandu. The focus will be on inclusive education and skills development, with participants working on prototypes that address everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities.
Organizers highlight that beyond just creating solutions, the event will serve as a platform for meaningful engagement, fostering innovation, collaboration, and long-term advancements in assistive technology.
