The political landscape in Bangladesh is currently experiencing significant turmoil following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, has publicly called on India to arrest the former Prime Minister and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, and return them to Bangladesh. This request was made during a press conference at the SCBA auditorium, where Khokon emphasized the need for good relations with India while accusing Hasina of causing numerous deaths in the country .
Khokon, who is also a joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), strongly criticized the current situation, urging against the declaration of a state of emergency. He demanded the resignation of Supreme Court judges involved in political activities and corruption within a week, as well as the resignation of state law officers, including Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, and officials from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), all of whom were appointed by the Hasina-led government. Furthermore, Khokon called for the release of political prisoners .
Bangladesh has been engulfed in protests, particularly by students opposing a quota system for government jobs, which escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations. On August 5, Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation, leading to President Mohammed Shahabuddin announcing the dissolution of parliament to pave the way for an interim administration .
In another significant development, BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was released. Meanwhile, in Dhaka, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to address the country's ongoing challenges. Sheikh Hasina has arrived in India, but her future plans remain unclear .
