Court order paves way to accelerate Melamchi project

After the Patan High Court issued an order against the Italian company CMC's petition, the Ministry of Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation has got its way clear for accelerating the much awaited Melamchi Drinking Water Project.
The Italian company CMC had filed a writ petition demanding to invalidate the Ministry's decision to confiscate the bank guarantee that the CMC is to get for the construction.
The works of the national pride project has been halted after the CMC all of a sudden stopped construction.
The Ministry on Thursday issued a press release informing that the division bench of Justices Prakash Kumar Dhungana and Krishna Bahadur Thapa issued an order rejecting the demand of interim order demanded by the company to stay Ministry's decision.
On December 17, the Italian company had unilaterally submitted a letter to the Ministry that it terminated the contract.
The Ministry then restricted the release of company's bank guarantee of Rs 2.56 billion at Nepal Investment Bank of Durbar Marg and Standard Chartered Bank of New Baneshwor. The last date of the bank guarantee is Dec 31.
