CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal Asserts Support for Constitution Amendment but Opposes Limiting Citizen Rights
Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has expressed that his party is open to constitution amendments, provided they do not infringe on citizens' rights or undo past achievements. Speaking to the media at Biratnagar airport, Dahal clarified, “We are not against amending the constitution, but any move to curtail the rights of the people or reverse the progress made in the name of such amendments will not be acceptable to the CPN (Maoist Centre).”
Dahal further stated that his party would strongly oppose any efforts to withdraw provisions on proportional representation and inclusion, which were instituted to uplift marginalized communities such as Madhesis, Dalits, Muslims, and indigenous groups. “These rights were earned through the Maoist-led 'people's war,' and we will not allow them to be undermined,” he added.
The former Prime Minister also attributed his party's departure from the government to its stance on corruption and efforts to take action against corrupt middlemen. "We had to step down as we initiated actions against corruption, but now we have the opportunity to strengthen and rebuild the party," Dahal remarked.
In his role as leader of the opposition, he warned the current government against engaging in activities that go against the interests of the nation and its citizens, signaling a vigilant stance on governance moving forward.
