Domestic Flights Disrupted in Nepal Due to Adverse Weather

There have been some temporary interruptions to domestic flights in Nepal due to unfavorable weather conditions. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu is still operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), however, there have been substantial disruptions to several flights to other destinations, including Biratnagar and Simara.

Two planes were diverted, according to TIA spokesperson Rinzee Sherpa, since the weather along their paths was getting worse. Two Yeti Airlines flights were forced to return, one to Biratnagar owing to deteriorating weather, and one to Simara, which was forced to return to Kathmandu after it was unable to land.

As a direct result of the bad weather, all-mountain sightseeing flights scheduled for today have been canceled, as confirmed by airline officials. Despite the disruption to domestic services, international flights have not been impacted and are operating as per their schedules.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology's Weather Forecasting Division attributes the current conditions to the southward positioning of the monsoon trough and a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. These factors have triggered monsoon activity across Nepal, causing cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall in provinces like Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim. In some areas, thunderstorms and lightning have also been reported.

The weather is expected to remain unstable for the coming days, prompting travelers to check for updates before planning flights.
