Elon Musk Unveils Upcoming Calling Feature for X (formerly Twitter)

Elon Musk has made a groundbreaking announcement this past Thursday, revealing that users of X, previously known as Twitter, will soon have the ability to initiate calls with each other without the need for conventional phone numbers. This exciting feature is expected to be accessible across a wide range of platforms, including iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.

According to Musk's recent post on X, both video and audio calls are set to become an integral part of the platform, with X serving as the central hub for user contact information—an 'effective global address book.' This innovation could potentially eliminate the necessity of saving phone numbers, allowing users to connect simply by searching for each other's usernames.

Notably, X CEO Linda Yaccarino had previously confirmed the platform's efforts to introduce this feature during an interview with CNBC earlier this month. Additionally, Andrea Conway, a designer at X, shared images of the new video calling option, conveniently located in the top right corner of X's Direct Messaging menu, resembling Instagram's similar feature.

Furthermore, X intends to implement stringent measures to combat spam calls, though it is likely that certain features may be limited to premium subscribers.

While X already provides a platform for live conversations through 'Spaces,' it is not ideally suited for one-on-one interactions, as it is primarily designed for group discussions. The addition of calling capabilities on X is expected to set the platform apart from competitors like Bluesky and Threads. This move aligns with Musk's vision of transforming X into a comprehensive application akin to WeChat. However, specific details about the feature's release date and accessibility, including whether it will be exclusive to Blue subscribers, have not yet been disclosed.
