The world's billionaires were affected by war, pandemics, and slow markets this year. There are 2,668 of them on Forbes' 36th annual list of the world's wealthiest people, down 87 from the previous year. They are now worth $12.7 trillion as a whole, $400 billion less than in 2021. Following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, there are 34 fewer billionaires in Russia than there was last year. In China, a government assault on innovation businesses has resulted in 87 fewer billionaires there than there was last year.
Talking about the top 10 billionaires list this year, Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has surpassed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who announced last week that he would be donating $20 billion from his wealth to his non-profit, to take the fourth spot on Forbes' list of the world's richest people.
On the strength of the increase in his personal fortune, which gave him the world's top wealth-gainer this year, Adani surpassed fellow countryman Mukesh Ambani to grab Asia's richest position in February of this year. Currently, Mukesh Ambani sits on the tenth list of real-time billionaires list according to Forbes.
According to Forbes data, the rapid rise in the value of Adani Group stocks helped to increase Adani's wealth by $2.9 billion.
