Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba Highlights Government’s Commitment to Development and Constitutional Integrity
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, emphasized the current government's commitment to steering Nepal towards development and prosperity. Speaking at a press conference organized by the Nepal Press Union (NPU) in Kailali at her residence in Dhangadhi, the Minister, who is also a central member of the Nepali Congress, explained that the coalition government, formed by the two major political parties, was created out of a shared vision to address the nation's challenges and promote growth.
Dr. Deuba acknowledged that some may find it surprising to see the Nepali Congress (NC) and the UML working together, but she reminded that history has shown these parties unite during times of national crisis to address the situation. She pointed out that political instability has hindered the country’s progress and prevented the government from fully meeting citizens' expectations. The Minister asserted that the current government is committed to maintaining stability and will continue in office until the next election, scheduled for three years from now.
Regarding constitutional matters, Dr. Deuba stated that the government is open to reviewing the Constitution to ensure its relevance, while preserving its core principles such as pluralism and inclusion. She emphasized that the Constitution, which serves as a peace document, will not be amended in ways that alter its fundamental characteristics.
During the press meet, Dr. Deuba also reflected on her recent official visit to India, where she discussed several bilateral projects. Among them were the construction of a bridge over the Mahakali River at Jhulaghat, and support for a cricket stadium in Phapla, Dhangadhi. She mentioned that her Indian counterpart has shown a positive response and has engaged the Board of Control for Cricket in India in discussions regarding the stadium project. Additionally, the Minister raised the need for upgrading the Gauriphanta border point and requested the release of water for irrigation from the Tanakpur Barrage.
Finally, Dr. Deuba assured that the government is making serious efforts to secure the safe release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali student from Mahendranagar, who has been reportedly held hostage by Hamas militants in Israel since October of last year.
