Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari Advocates for Sustainable Resource Management on World Environment Day 2024
In a message of best wishes on the occasion of World Environment Day 2024, former President Bidya Devi Bhandari emphasized the urgent need to address the excessive exploitation of natural resources, imprudent consumption, and haphazard development activities.
Former President Bhandari highlighted that the overuse of natural resources and unsustainable consumption patterns have disrupted the environmental balance, leading to issues such as air pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. She called for civil society, the private sector, and governments at all levels to take responsibility for fostering coexistence between nature and human beings while preserving sustainable ecological systems in the face of the global climate crisis.
She stressed the importance of conserving water sources, including wells, ponds, rivers, and lakes, and advocated for the sustainable utilization and recharge of groundwater. Additionally, she promoted the adoption of organic farming practices and encouraged the use of electric stoves and vehicles to reduce environmental impact.
The former President also addressed basic environmental issues, urging the cessation of harmful practices such as fishing with pesticides and electric currents, and reducing the tendency to set fires. She emphasized the need for reducing and managing the use of plastic materials in line with the principles of a circular economy, integrating these practices into everyday life for better environmental stewardship.
