The nation's longest-serving prime leader, Shinzo Abe, passed away on Friday at the age of 67 after being shot while supporting a candidate.
Japanese state media have confirmed his death. He was shot while addressing an election rally on the streets of Nara. Abe, 67, was rushed to Nara University Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment.
A 41-year-old man has been arrested for firing on Abe. Japan is a country of 125 million people and has amongst the strictest gun control laws in the world, and the number of firearm-related deaths there each year is typically in the single digits. Even for Japanese citizens, who must first obtain a recommendation from a shooting association and then go through rigorous police inspections, obtaining a gun license is a time-consuming and difficult process. Therefore, the shooting of a renowned figure like the former Prime Minister by a normal person has startled the entire world.
