Government Appeals to Supreme Court to Reinstate Mandatory National ID for Social Security Allowances
The government has petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn an interim order that currently exempts citizens from the mandatory requirement of a national identity card for accessing social security allowances and other services.
Previously, on August 23, a bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Til Prasad Shrestha issued an interim order halting the enforcement of the ID card mandate. In response, the Office of the Attorney General filed a request on Friday to revoke this order, emphasizing the benefits of implementing the national identity card.
The government argues that mandatory national ID cards would prevent duplicate social security claims, ensure uniform identification standards, and aid in identifying offenders. It has urged the court to allow the continuation of the national ID program to enhance transparency and accountability in social security distribution.
