Eid al-Fitr, celebrated by Muslims worldwide, signifies the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan. Falling on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar, the timing of Eid al-Fitr varies based on the sighting of the new moon. It is marked by a special salat (Islamic prayer) of two rakats, usually performed in an open field or large hall.
