The Industry, Commerce and Consumer Welfare Protection Committee of the parliament on Tuesday directed the government to test quality of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in circulation in the market and take action against the concerned bottlers if the cylinders are substandard.
“People dying to explosion of gas cylinders is a serious case. This is why the committee directs the concerned government bodies to strictly test the quality of gas cylinders and take needful action against anyone found guilty,” Bhisma Raj Angdambe, chairman of the committee, said.
The committee also directed the government to immediately start work for building new storage facilities for LPG, petrol and diesel with capacity to meet market demand of at least three months.
At the meeting on Tuesday, Angdambe as well as other lawmakers criticized the Ministry of Supplies and agencies under it for their failure to implement its decisions and directions time and again.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister for Supplies Ganesh Man Pun said that the lack of effective communication mechanism among government bodies was affecting service delivery. “Effective communication mechanism among government bodies is vital to improving service delivery,” Pun said, adding: “We always respect the committee's decisions and directions.”
Minister Pun also directed Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) to immediately assure people that there won't be shortage of petroleum products and that they don't need to panic.
