Hydropower projects worth 4,000 MW in the last stage of its study

Nepal Government declared that the study of a hydropower project of around 4 thousand megawatt capacity is in the last phase. Study and research related to some f these projects have been completed whereas some is yet to be completed. As per the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, seven big projects are being studied and researched. These projects have a capacity of around 1 thousand 759 MW. The study and research are prioritized by the ministry in order to complement government’s mission to produce 15 thousand MW electricity in the next ten years.

One of the major projects within these projects is Kankai Hydropowr Project. The hydroproject is estimated to have a production capacity of 84 MW. The project will be situated in the boarders of Illam and Jhapa.

Similarly, another project Sarada Babai, situated in the border of Dang and Salyan, is estimated to have a production capacity of 93 MW. The environmental impact evaluation process of this hydropower has been completed. Besides, Dudhkoshi Hydropower with a 102 MW electricity production capacity is also being studied. Similarly, another hydropower project called Naumure Hydropower is expected to contribute in hydropower production, irrigation and fishery. This project has a capacity of 245 MW and falls under highly prioritized project of Nepal Government.

In addition to this, the experts are working for the designing of hydropower Arun IV. Its capacity is around 372 MW. The hydropower project located in Sankhuwasabha has brought in curiosities from foreign investors as well.

The ministry also stated other ten projects worth 393 MW capacities are also being studied. In these projects, 56 MW capacity of Apsuwa Khola, 50 MW of Beni Kaligandaki, 47 MW Dudhkoshi IV, 30 MW Sankhuwa I, 27 MW Upper Khudi, 25 MW Sankhuwakhola, 20 MW Lower Chamelia, 11 MW Karnali Chisapani and 15 MW Jawa Khola are being studied.

Currently, 14 projects are at the last stage of study and have a capacity of 13 thousand 609 MW. Sunkoshi II and Sunkoshi III with capacity of 116 MW and 536 MW are in the final phase of the completion of its research. The ministry claims that the government has been encouraging works at a smoother pace.
