Impact of Adverse Weather on Domestic Flights in Nepal
Adverse weather conditions have significantly affected domestic flights in Nepal, with disruptions reported primarily at the Pokhara and Bharatpur airports. According to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), poor weather and low visibility have been the main culprits behind these disruptions.
Jagan Nath Niraula, the General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport, confirmed that while domestic flights have been impacted, international flights continue to operate as scheduled. He explained, “Due to poor weather and reduced visibility, flights to Pokhara and Bharatpur have been unable to operate. Other airports in hilly regions are also experiencing some disruption in flights.”
Deependra Kumar Karan, a spokesperson for Buddha Air, reported that no flights have been able to land or take off from Pokhara and Bharatpur so far. He added that flights might resume once visibility improves with a reduction in rainfall.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has indicated that the country is currently under the influence of monsoonal winds. The Meteorological Forecasting Division noted that the monsoon trough is situated slightly north of its average position, resulting in partial to generally cloudy weather across the country.
Some areas across all provinces are experiencing light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning. There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall in a few locations in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as one or two places in other provinces.
