KMC to bring five broomers in one and a half months; each machine to cost over Rs.2 Million

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is bringing five broomer machines within one and a half months to clean the valley's dusty roads, said the KMC at a press conference here today.

The broomer machines will be imported from Italy, said KMC's Spokesperson Ishwor Man Dangol. Each of them costs over Rs 2 million. So far the KMC has three broomer machines (two waiting for maintenance).

Setting up fences on either sides of the Manohara river is underway, he said. The drive is part of integrating lands surrounding the river. Sixty one garages have been ordered to vacate the area, he said, adding that bidding has been announced to rebuild Kamalpokhari.

A total of 650 streetlamps have been set up under the 'Mayor Illumination Programme' out of 8,500 demanded for all wards, he said. The KMC has set aside Rs 120 million for the current fiscal year of 2018/19 to construct overhead bridges. A design has been prepared to construct two movable overhead bridges, he said.

A call for tender has been issued for constructing a parking area on the plot of land owned by the KMC at Dharmapath, KMC ward number 22. Letters of intent have been coming in response to the call. It is also stated that the KMC is planning to construct a smart parking at Durbar Marga.

It was also shared in the press meet that action has been taken in the last six months against 672 individuals running shops by encroaching upon the road pavements. Similarly, 4,756 motorcycle parked in haphazard manner have been seized and action taken against their owners, 99 stray cattle have been managed and 39 unauthorised hoarding boards have been removed.

He also informed that special initiatives have been taken to remove the shops being run on the footpath at Ward Nos 22, 23, 24 and 25. The KMC has also been working to manage the cables which are scattered randomly in different parts of the city in a bid to beautify the city.

KMC spokesperson Dangol said there was no need of Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, adding it has usurped the rights of the local level. He said discussions were going on with the government on this issue.

It is stated that KMC was in favor of scrapping the agreement reached with the contractor for the construction of the Kathmandu View Tower, if the construction company further delayed the construction works in the present context of the construction not taking speed.
