The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) has initiated a comprehensive road safety campaign to reduce accidents during the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals. With passenger traffic expected to surge as people leave Kathmandu Valley, MoPIT is focusing on preventive measures to ensure safer travel.

At a meeting held on Sunday, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal instructed all relevant agencies to prioritize road repairs, specifically addressing potholes and improving overall road conditions before the festivals begin. He also emphasized the need for the Nepal Police to strictly enforce traffic regulations, remain prepared for emergency rescues, and provide immediate medical assistance to road accident victims.

Minister Dahal further pledged to take long-term legal and policy initiatives to enhance road safety management, announcing plans to revitalize the Road Safety Council. He stressed that road safety relies on a combination of well-maintained infrastructure, vehicles in proper condition, skilled drivers, and informed passengers.

Keshab Kumar Sharma, Secretary at MoPIT, highlighted the importance of road safety during the festive period and advocated for measures such as requiring two drivers for long-route vehicles and strict adherence to traffic regulations.

Road safety experts Dr. Parthamani Parajuli and Saroj Kumar Pradhan called for making the Road Safety Council more effective in addressing safety challenges.

Representatives from the Nepal Police, Ministry of Health and Population, Department of Roads, Road Board Nepal, and Department of Road Management also discussed their respective efforts and plans to ensure road safety during the festive season.
