NDRRMA Forecasts Over 1.8 Million People to be Affected by Monsoon in 2024
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has projected that over 1.8 million individuals could be impacted by this year’s monsoon season. The forecast, released on Monday, anticipates increased rainfall, heightening the risk of widespread disruption.
NDRRMA Spokesperson Dr. Disan Bhattarai detailed that more than 1.8 million people, spanning 412,000 households, are likely to experience varying degrees of impact due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. Specifically, it is estimated that 83,000 families will be directly affected, with 18,000 households requiring rescue operations and relief assistance.
Reflecting on the previous year, Dr. Bhattarai noted that while it was initially estimated that 1.2 million people would be affected, the actual number exceeded two million. This year, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has forecasted a potential increase in rainfall by 35-55 percent above the average.
In response to the heightened risk, all relevant agencies have been instructed to undertake necessary preparations. Dr. Bhattarai emphasized that preparedness efforts are being carried out in accordance with the monsoon preparedness and response national action plan developed by the Home Ministry.
