Nepal Investment Mega Bank Ltd. (NIMB) has made history as the first commercial bank in Nepal to receive accreditation from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in the medium-size category. This achievement enables NIMB to manage climate-related projects ranging from USD 50 million to USD 250 million, marking a significant milestone for Nepal’s private sector in climate finance. The Green Climate Fund, established by 194 countries under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2010, is the world’s largest fund dedicated to supporting climate action in developing countries.

Mr. Jyoti Prakash Pandey, CEO of NIMB, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “We are honored to be recognized by GCF and are eager to leverage this opportunity to further our mission of implementing innovative and transformative climate change projects.” He also thanked the Ministry of Finance (NDA), consultants, and all stakeholders who supported the bank during the accreditation process. With this new status, NIMB aims to play a leading role in the private sector’s efforts toward addressing climate challenges in Nepal.

NIMB intends to focus on key climate challenges such as energy access, sustainable agriculture, transportation, water security, and building resilient infrastructure. The bank plans to collaborate with local communities, government agencies, and international partners to implement projects that will contribute to Nepal’s climate goals and enhance global climate resilience. These projects will address both mitigation and adaptation, helping Nepal reduce its carbon footprint while improving climate resilience in vulnerable communities.

Founded in 2010, GCF supports developing nations’ efforts to combat climate change by funding mitigation and adaptation initiatives. The fund is designed to deliver equal amounts of financial assistance for both areas while adhering to the principles of the UNFCCC. NIMB’s accreditation signifies a major step forward for Nepal’s banking sector in tapping into global climate finance resources to help the country transition to a low-emission, climate-resilient future.
