The Government of Nepal has declared a public holiday from Thursday, 15th Kartik, to Monday, 19th Kartik, in celebration of Tihar. Nepal Stock Exchange Limited (NEPSE) will also remain closed during this period, resuming regular trading on Tuesday, 20th Kartik, 2081, at 11:00 AM.
Tihar, also known as Deepawali or Yamapanchak, is a vibrant five-day festival in Nepal that honors Yama, the God of Death, and Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth. This colorful celebration emphasizes the bond between humans and animals and recognizes the significance of wealth, success, and family ties. Each day carries unique rituals: Kaag Tihar is devoted to crows, Kukur Tihar to dogs, Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja to cows and Goddess Laxmi, Mha Puja for self-reflection, and Bhai Tika for blessing brothers. Homes are adorned with lights, garlands, and candles, while pathways are lit for Laxmi Puja to invite the Goddess of Wealth into homes. Bhai Tika, the final day, is a special occasion where siblings exchange blessings, symbolizing prosperity and longevity.
