The Government of Nepal has announced a public holiday for Monday (today) i.e. on the 1st Magh on the occasion of the 'Maghe Sankranti'.
Nepal Stock Exchange Limited (NEPSE) will remain closed to mark Maghe Sankranti. Regular trading will resume in NEPSE from Tuesday (Magh 2, 2080) at 11:00 AM.
Maghe Sankranti is a significant Nepali festival celebrated on the first day of Magh in the Vikram Sambat calendar, marking the end of the winter solstice in the month of Poush. The Tharu people consider it their new year, and it is recognized as a major government-declared annual festival for the Magar community. Similar to solstice festivals in other religions, Hindus partake in ritual baths at various locations, including Sankhamul, Triveni, Devghat, Ridi, and Dolalghat. Festive foods like laddoo, ghee, and sweet potatoes are distributed, and traditional rituals involve nieces and nephews seeking blessings and Tika at Mama Ghar.
