President Ramchandra Paudel is addressing the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which began on November 11 and runs through November 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Leading the Nepali delegation, President Paudel is participating in the ‘World Leaders' Climate Action Summit,’ where he aims to amplify Nepal’s stance on climate action and resilience.
At the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President Paudel arrived in Baku on Monday. Nepal has organized a separate high-level session, chaired by President Paudel, set for Wednesday. This session will focus on addressing the loss and damage wrought by climate change in mountain regions, aiming to garner global attention and support for Nepal’s mountainous areas that face severe climate risks.
The conference brings together 50,000 attendees, including Heads of State, ministers, delegates, and climate activists, all of whom are urged to take collective action against extreme climate challenges. Nepal’s delegation is sharing the country's climate challenges, adaptive practices, and ambitions in climate action, underscoring the critical role of developed nations in curbing carbon emissions and bolstering climate financing.
Notably, COP29’s agenda includes discussions on a new collective quantified goal (NCQG) for climate finance, a key focus for this year, as countries explore further steps for global climate resilience. The event hosts leaders from around 40 countries and Prime Ministers from 35 nations, aiming to strengthen international climate commitments.
