Rasuwa Customs Office Sees Revenue Increase Despite Infrastructure Concerns
The Rasuwa Customs Office reported a notable increase in revenue collection, with Rs 1.54 billion collected in the month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) of the current fiscal year 2024/25, up by Rs 500 million compared to the same period last year. The revenue boost was largely driven by import duties on a variety of goods, including footwear, roll fabrics, electronic items, vehicle parts, and fruits like apples and walnuts.
The Chief Customs Officer highlighted the significant role of imports from China, especially equipment for hydropower projects, in contributing to the revenue surge. However, the increased import activity has raised concerns about road safety on the Pasang Lhamu Highway. The transportation of equipment far exceeding the road's capacity has heightened the risk of landslides and the potential sinking of bridges along the route.
Local residents and freight operators have voiced concerns over the deteriorating conditions of the Syabrubesi-Rasuwagadhi road, a key route for revenue-generating imports. The 16 km stretch is plagued by potholes, making it difficult for freight vehicles to navigate, while ongoing maintenance work on Bharkhu Danda remains incomplete, further straining the infrastructure. The Bus Operators' Committee has reported that the road's poor condition, particularly at Kalika, where it has sunk under the weight of overloaded trucks, is also disrupting passenger bus services.
The ongoing neglect of road maintenance, especially during the peak of the Mansarovar-Kailash pilgrimage, continues to cause difficulties for travelers and raises concerns about future infrastructure sustainability in the region.
