Nepal Rastra Bank Recommends Seven Ways to Stay Safe From Online Monetary Fraud
Nepal Rastra Bank has issued a list of recommendations to users of digital payment systems to stay safe from online frauds.
Digital transactions have been on the rise in Nepal. While doing financial transactions from home through various means, different criminal individuals/groups have been found of defrauding the users.
These are the recommendations, translated and paraphrased as required:
1) To steer away from fraudsters asking for money by impersonating friends and relatives. To not fall into the trap of fraudsters who demand login details of payment systems, those who announce fake lottery wins, and those who encourage investment in illegal investment vehicles.
2) To not disclose OTP, password, and login details of digital payment systems. To frequently change the passwords of such platforms for additional security.
3) To confirm from an alternative platform if a relative or a friend demands money online, as tricksters may be impersonating.
4) To stay safe from phishing attacks by not installing unnecessary and unofficial apps.
5) To stay away from people who demand passwords during a financial transaction and take careful measures if they send QR and bar codes during payment.
6) To carefully examine websites that have a payment portal. Extra attention should be given to ensure the website is official. Also, secure websites have an https extension.
7) To immediately contact the payment portal, bank, or respective wallet in case of suspicion of fraud. Users can also directly submit any grievance to the central bank at: https://gunaso.nrb.org.np/.
