Sri Lanka, grappling with severe financial constraints, is gradually recovering from its most significant economic downturn following the implementation of austerity measures through an IMF bailout, stated President Ranil Wickremesinghe during his Independence Day speech.
Reflecting on the humiliation of being labeled a financially distressed nation, Wickremesinghe opted for a concise statement instead of the usual comprehensive address. The country defaulted on its $46 billion foreign debt in 2022, leading to months of civil unrest and the removal of the then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The IMF initiated a $2.9 billion bailout loan in March last year, implementing tax hikes and price increases under a reform program.
Despite recent price spikes due to IMF-mandated tax adjustments, the president expressed optimism about the gradual dissipation of challenges and the strengthening of the economy. Wickremesinghe emphasized the need to learn from past mistakes to prevent their recurrence.
