A protest against the proposed cable car project in Phungling took a violent turn on Saturday evening, leaving at least 24 people injured in clashes between security forces and demonstrators. Among them, four individuals have been sent outside Taplejung for further medical care.

According to District Police Chief (DSP) Ravi Rawal, both sides suffered injuries, with 12 security personnel and 12 protesters hurt during the confrontation. Three protesters and one security officer required advanced treatment, while five security personnel are currently under medical supervision in the district.

Authorities arrested 15 individuals on rioting charges and confirmed using tear gas to disperse the crowd. However, protesters allege that security forces went beyond handling the situation, forcefully raiding homes and hotels, beating individuals before taking them into custody.

Protest leader Kirtiman Madan claimed that police entered homes at night, vandalized properties, and used unnecessary force. In response to rising tensions, local authorities have imposed a curfew from 5 AM, restricting movement in Phungling, Pathibhara, Kaflepati, and Baludanda.

The conflict erupted after the No Cable Car group staged a rally following a three-day foot march from February 18 to 20. Officials say the confrontation began when security personnel attempted to intervene in a torch rally due to fire concerns. Protesters, however, argue that the crackdown was excessive, accusing authorities of resorting to unnecessary violence.
